2012 Scholarship Awardees

The Yonsei Basketball Association awarded the following 2012 Scholarships for community service and academic record. Each recipient received $1,000  towards his/her college education.

Kristen Ishii  -  Sue Kamiyama Scholarship

Graduating from South High School in Torrance with a 4.0 unweighted GPA; Kristen will be attending UCLA to pursue a degree in Biology. She participates in numerous Community Service activities. A few examples of her many hours of volunteer work are her involvement with Community’s Child Abused Women’s Shelter, where she has raised funds and collected donated items for the women and children at the shelter, served as President of the Adopt a Grandparent at Keiro Nursing Home, and volunteers at Kodomo no Gakko where she teaches young children about their Japanese heritage; she has participated in numerous other Girl Scout, church and community service activities. 

In addition to her academic accomplishments and hours of community service volunteer work, Kristen has been active in various school organizations, including Freshman and Sophomore Class President, Junior Class Treasurer, ASB Historian, Secretary of the Preferred Organization of Positive Students, and KIWIN’s (part of Kiwanis Organization) a community service club. She participates in school sports – cross country, track and field, and basketball.

Kristen received strong letters of recommendations from a South High AP Teacher and a Former FOR President. “Kristen is a highly focused individual with a tremendous sense of humor, a hard worker, a leader, independent, dedicated, creative, ambitious, committed to everything she does, yet has a genuine concern for the well-being of others and a clear passion for learning.”

Trent Fujii – Yonsei General Scholarship

Graduating from Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach with a 3.8 Unweighted GPA; Trent will be attending University of Southern California to pursue a degree in Political Science with an emphasis in Pre-Law. He participated in numerous Community Service activities. A few examples of his many hours of volunteer work are his participation in the Relay 4 Life that raises money and awareness for cancer research, New Channels Club Special Events Coordinator at school that pairs up with children’s organizations to coordinate outings for inner city children, volunteer at the City of Manhattan Beach Joselyn Center for Senior Citizens, and involvement with various youth basketball organizations.

In addition to Trent’s academic accomplishments, he has been awarded numerous Best Delegate Awards at the various High School Model United Nations conferences, including the National Conference, where he spoke at the United Nations building upon receiving his award.  Trent has been active in various school organizations, including Sophomore and Senior Class President, Junior Class Secretary/Treasurer, National Honors Society Vice President and President, President of the Asian Hope Club that promotes Asian Cultural awareness and community service projects, and the New Channels Club previously mentioned.  He has been on the Varsity Swim Team for 3 years and previously participated in the school’s Concert and Symphonic Bands.

Trent comes with strong letters of recommendations from the Vice President of the Jetts Organization and a Mira Costa High Teacher. “A seasoned trumpet player, a boys’ and girls’ basketball coach, a competitive swimmer, a lifeguard and swim instructor, the president of three campus clubs (including National Honors Society), and our senior class president, Trent is clearly a powerful force on our campus and within the community. He is a leader, a thinker, a visionary, and a beautiful person inside and out.”
