2010 Scholarship Awardees

In keeping with our mission, we awarded three scholarships in 2010.

One of the scholarships is the Sue Kamiyama Scholarship, named after one of the charter members of the Yonsei Basketball Association, who passed away in 2004. Sue was a valued member of Yonsei since its beginning, and was a strong and vocal advocate of girls youth sports.

Laura Kobashigawa

Laura graduated from Brentwood School (private school in Brentwood) with a 3.94 unweighted GPA, and will be attending Brown University.

She participates in numerous Community Service activities. A few examples are her volunteer work at Westside Children’s Center in the role of teacher’s aide over the past 4 years, assisting with education and development of low income children; Founder and President of FACE AIDS Chapter at Brentwood School involved in fundraising and AIDS education; Rustic Pathways Organization service in Costa Rica teaching English to local children; and

In addition to her academic accomplishments and hours of volunteer work, Laura is a classical pianist and a talented basketball player – as they say, a well rounded individual. Strong letters of recommendations from one of the Brentwood School Department Chairperson and the Coordinator of Volunteers and Special Events at Westside Children’s Center accompanied her application.

Yonsei Basketball Association General Scholarships

This year we also awarded two general Yonsei scholarships.

Ryan Shiozaki

Lauren Uba

Graduating from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School (in Rolling Hills Estates) with a 4.0 unweighted GPA and 2010 PVPHS Valedictorian, Lauren will be attending UCLA.

Lauren participated in numerous Community Service activities – a few examples of her volunteer hours are numerous Girl Scouts’ Community volunteer projects, including her Gold Award Project that organized and updated medical supplies in her High School’s Disaster and First Aid Sheds; HERO Club (Habitat and Environment Restoration Organization) activities; Long Beach Memorial Medical Center Volunteer, Keep It Green Club (Environmental Awareness) tree planting and cleaning beaches; and volunteer Swim Coach. In addition, Lauren has volunteered many hours in her High School athletic training room assisting the Head Trainer, which enabled her to be a valuable volunteer athletic trainer for the injury prone Yonsei 16 in Japan.  Lauren applied with strong recommendations from PVPHS Faculty Member and PVPHS Vice President of Community Service.
