2009 Scholarship Awardees
In keeping with our mission, we awarded three scholarships this year.
One of the scholarships is the Sue Kamiyama Scholarship, named after one of the charter members of the Yonsei Basketball Association, who passed away in 2004. Sue was a valued member of Yonsei since its beginning, and was a strong and vocal advocate of girls’ youth sports.
This year we were also able to award two general Yonsei scholarships.
Akemi Arzouman – Sue Kamiyama Scholarship
Graduating from University High (Irvine) - 3.8 Academic GPA; accepted to participate in Externship - Stanford Sleep Research Clinic, and wrote research abstracts on sleep disorders which were selected for presentation in two Sleep Conferences in Baltimore in 2008 and recently in Seattle.
Akemi has participated in numerous Community Service activities through the Orange Coast Optimists, Jr. Young Buddhist Association, and school based community service organizations. She was Club Founder and President of SupportAbility at her school, and part of a County-wide Non-profit organization that raised funds to provide scholarships to aid students exhibiting personal courage, character, and who suffered great hardship. She was also selected by her Principal to be a team leader responsible for mentors of incoming freshmen to assist them in transition to high school.
Molly Serizawa
Graduating from Campbell Hall (North Hollywood) - 4.2 Academic GPA; accepted to participate in Stanford Reischauer Scholars Program - web-based lecture series US-Japan relations.
Molly has participated in numerous Community Service activities - Assisteens Assistance League of So. Cal assisting underprivileged children by fundraising and recreational activities, Heal the Bay - organized student volunteers, and other volunteer activities at OCBC, SFV Japanese school. In addition, Molly participated in Girl's Scouts (Gold Award) and Campbell Hall community service club, Nikkei Federation's Rising Stars Youth Leadership Program, and was recipient of numerous honors and awards for community service and academics.
Stephen Yoshizawa
Graduating from West High School (Torrance) - 4.5 Academic GPA
Stephen has participated in numerous Community Service activities through his involvement with Key Club Service organization, where he held positions such as Technology Chair, Treasurer, and President; the CA Scholarship Federation, and the Pacific American Volunteer Association (PAVA), - a few of the activities include Beach and Marsh clean-ups, Relay for Life, Sharedbread Soup Kitchen Volunteer, Trick or Treat for UNICEF, Make a Wish Money Drive. In addition, Stephen is a Senior Tutoring Coordinator in a tutoring program to help his fellow students and was selected as a Senior delegate for the Freshman Focus Club to assist freshmen transition to high school.
Stephen is the recipient of many awards and honors, including academic (National Merit finalist), America's Foreign language (Japanese), and citizenship awards (2006-2009).
